Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies Policy

This policy applies to authors, reviewers, editors, and the publisher of the Journal of Multimedia Information System (JMIS). It governs the use of generative AI, large language models, image generators, and other AI-assisted technologies in research, manuscript preparation, peer review, editorial work, and production.

Use in Manuscript Preparation

When generative AI or AI-assisted technologies are used in the writing process, they may support limited improvements to readability, language, or clarity, but they must not replace the authors' scholarly judgment or original intellectual contribution. All AI-assisted output must be reviewed and revised by the authors, who remain fully responsible for the entire manuscript.

Disclosure by Authors

Authors must disclose the name and version of each generative AI or AI-assisted tool used, where available, and the purpose and extent of its use. The disclosure must appear in the Declaration of Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies before the References. If no such technology was used, the heading must be retained and marked Not applicable.

AI Used as a Research Method

When AI is the subject of the research or is used for data generation, annotation, coding, analysis, modeling, image generation, or another research method, authors must report the tool, model or version, prompts or settings where relevant, validation procedures, and limitations in sufficient detail for scholarly assessment and reproducibility.

Authorship and Attribution

Generative AI and AI-assisted technologies must not be listed or cited as authors or co-authors because authorship requires human accountability. Authors must cite original scholarly sources, verify every reference, obtain required permissions, and ensure that AI-assisted content does not infringe copyright or other third-party rights.

Accuracy, Integrity, Privacy, and Confidentiality

Authors are responsible for detecting and correcting inaccurate, biased, fabricated, plagiarized, or improperly manipulated AI output. Confidential, proprietary, copyrighted, personal, or participant information must not be entered into an external AI system unless the authors have lawful authority, appropriate consent, and adequate confidentiality safeguards.

Peer Review and Editorial Work

Submitted manuscripts, supplementary files, review reports, and editorial communications are confidential. Reviewers and editors must not upload any part of these materials to an external generative AI or automated system where confidentiality cannot be assured. Scholarly judgment and final editorial decisions must remain under human responsibility. Any journal-authorized use of AI must be transparent and subject to appropriate safeguards.

Non-compliance

Failure to disclose relevant AI use or misuse of AI may result in editorial investigation, rejection, correction, expression of concern, retraction, or other action under the JMIS Research and Publication Ethics policy and applicable COPE guidance.
